Oversized Deflectors
Cooperation with a well-known Scandinavian truck manufacturer is a strong example of how demanding innovation can accelerate development and expand the portfolio of both partners.
We addressed the challenge of producing oversized deflectors for next-generation electric trucks by implementing state-of-the-art robotic bonding technology. This has prepared us for further phases of transformation in electric mobility.
We continue to develop a long-term, synergistic partnership that enables both parties to respond to rapidly evolving market trends and sets new standards for the industry.

A deflector is an aerodynamic component designed to optimize airflow around the vehicle, helping to reduce drag, noise, and overall energy consumption during operation. In this particular application, the deflector also serves as a cover for the battery module located behind the driver’s cabin. In addition to its aerodynamic function, the part must therefore meet demanding requirements for strength, dimensional stability, and long-term durability.
R&D and Production Requirements
High stiffness despite significantly increased component size
Dimensional stability
Highest operational safety standards
Improved aerodynamics
Maximum precision, repeatability, and joint quality
Development and Production of Deflectors for Electric Trucks
Promens Zlín naturally attracts customers with ambition, innovation mindset, and potential for joint growth. A renowned Swedish premium truck manufacturer is no exception. When we resumed long-term cooperation in 2022, we knew we were facing a challenge that would move all parties forward.
And this has been achieved in full.
Today, we are literally covering the backs – or rather the cab structures – of new electric tractor units through the production of large-scale deflectors.
“During development, we designed a material solution meeting the high requirements for strength and dimensional stability of the deflector.
The resulting part improves the aerodynamics of the tractor unit with the battery module located behind the cab.“

Robotic Bonding as a Response to Strict Requirements for Safety and Reliability
The combination of exceptional component size and strict requirements for quality and stiffness led us to further expand our technology portfolio with a robotic bonding line.

The robotic bonding workstation ensures maximum precision, consistency, and joint quality through a fully automated process with continuous monitoring of all key parameters. This enables repeatable and reliable results even for large and technically demanding components.

„We follow industry trends and actively seek development opportunities in new challenges.
The breadth of our technological portfolio often surprises even our customers.”

A Wide Portfolio of Technologies Under One Roof
From RIM, SMC, and vacuum forming to finishing operations such as grinding, painting, assembly, and advanced logistics – this is Promens Zlín.
Golden Robotic Hands
We supported the customer’s development team from the very first prototypes, working jointly to identify the optimal technical solution. By implementing robotic bonding, we met the customer’s stringent requirements and ensured the required quality we can fully stand behind.
„We are involved in all phases of product development.
With electrification in automotive, we already have valuable experience that gives us a strong advantage and perspective.“

Deflectors Twice the Size? No Problem
Maintaining serial precision for components approximately twice the size of standard deflectors is not feasible with manual bonding processes.
With fully controlled, repeatable, and precisely monitored execution, robotic automation now supports the process. Plasma surface treatment is also used to ensure optimal preparation for adhesive application.

The robotic station performs plasma treatment of the bonding surface, ensuring optimal conditions for adhesive application. Continuous quality control and automated evaluation of each step guarantee process reliability and repeatability.
The system continuously monitors bonding quality. For each component, it verifies correct plasma treatment and evaluates adhesive application using image capture and algorithm-based inspection.
The amount of adhesive is recorded both in the system and on an identification label with a unique serial number.
Machine-Based Bonding Validation

The robotic arm is equipped with interchangeable heads for both plasma treatment and adhesive application. This flexibility, combined with high precision, enables efficient processing of large-format parts such as this side panel for electric tractors.
Deflector Assembly
The assembled deflectors, fitted with stainless-steel brackets, are subsequently packaged and shipped to customer-approved external paint shops. Assembly, including bracket installation, represents the final stage of the process.

The final assembly of the deflector, including the installation of stainless steel brackets, is the final stage of the entire process. The finished parts are then packed and shipped to external paint shops certified by the customer.
Optimised Production with Minimal Risk of Damage
The technology was installed in the production hall to optimise internal logistics and eliminate the risk of component damage during handling. Components flow directly from vacuum forming to robotic bonding within the same production hall.
The workstation is also protected against external influences such as dust, drafts, or temperature fluctuations that could affect the bonding process.
“The truck segment is very important to us. However, customers from other industries can also benefit from the new bonding line, as the robotic workstation can be reprogrammed and used across segments.
Thanks to automation, we can process orders even more efficiently and at lower production costs.”

New Opportunities for Electrified Freight Transport
Electrification of freight transport represents a major step forward for both the automotive industry and the environment. With robotic bonding, however, it is not the endpoint.
Oversized deflectors will also find applications in future innovations in freight transport, where zero-emission mobility is only at the beginning of its development.

Logistic map for e-truck parts: From Promens Zlín, the deflectors travel to external certified paint shops, from where they continue to Gothenburg, Sweden – the place of final assembly of the e-trucks.
Inspiration for Reducing the Carbon Footprint
Beyond product development, this cooperation also motivates us to reduce our own environmental footprint. The OEM’s sustainability strategy extends to its suppliers.
In addition to using recycled materials, we are actively exploring further steps toward a more sustainable future.

Electrification in freight transport is an important milestone — but certainly not the final destination. Thanks to robotic bonding, we are ready for further technological innovations on the path to a zero-emission future.
